Penance hoping that a prayer be answered. Am I going at it correctly?
I’ve started practicing a form of penance, hoping it might inspire God to answer a prayer that’s very close to my heart.
Traditionally, I understand that penance is often done as an act of gratitude after a prayer has been answered. However, in my case, I’m approaching it a bit differently—doing it in advance as a way of demonstrating my sincerity and devotion.
I’m a social drinker, not someone who abuses alcohol, but I do enjoy the occasional drink, especially in the social settings that are so integral to Latin American culture of which i am part of. As a personal sacrifice, I’ve decided to stop drinking altogether, offering it as a penance in the hope that my wife finds relief from a personal struggle she has been facing for some time.
I can’t help but wonder if I’m approaching this the wrong way. Does this come across as me trying to negotiate with or demand something from God, rather than simply entrusting my prayer to Him?
Thanks you for any guidance you can provide.
