I’m writing a book about emo culture and would love some opinions and input from 80’s and 90’s emo kids.

Hello!

I’m a younger elder emo (born in 1992) and still appreciate that little blip in millennial culture. The music was key for me and it’s still my favorite 20ish years later. I started an outline for a nonfictional book with the heavy focus on the early 2000’s, but I want to at least at a couple chapters of the history of emo culture from the beginning - early 80s ish?

I’m running into an issue of what the internet people consider “emo” music and I want to be as historically accurate as possible, out of respect for my elders lmao. <3 I’m hoping to reach the truest of elder emos - such as those who were there or at least know more about the early emo days than I do.

If you can chime in on what you consider to be early emo music, I’d appreciate it. Maybe add in the year you were born or some other decade identifying info? Really any thing you want to add about your experience during your peak emo era would be helpful! Along the lines of what fans of those bands looked like, what you consider to be emo music, and any opinions on the early 2000’s culture/music (MySpace, skinny jeans, whatever). Just don’t be hateful because I don’t want my thread to be locked lol. I just want opinions. :)

also any little known stories/facts about bands you might have would be fun to sort through and mention in the book? Give me all your emo brain information pleaaaaase. I love this culture and I’m excited to learn more. :)

I really appreciate any input. Thanks so much in advance.
