Extremely stressful road trip
After the experience I just had with it on the road between Kansas City and Central Oklahoma, I'm seriously considering if I'll take it over the road again.
It was a nightmare - the car navigation tried to take me to different, slower, chargers right after I had charged it to 85%, THREE times and I KNEW I had enough charge to get to the next stop (and ABRP confirmed this in the app)- I finally turned the nav. off but not before it wasted 30 minutes of my time at the very start of what was supposed to be a 6 hour drive.
-Found a fast charger at a Ford dealership and watched the charging speeds go from 1 kw to to 175 KW and back down again, over and over until it terminated charging at 60%. Ford employee said the charger worked at great speeds for another vehicle the day before. I took video of the charging speed fluctuating to show the dealership, if needed. It is due to go in for the charging port unit recall and I'm hoping this will address whatever the cause of this was. I've had no issues charging it at home or even on the way to Kansas City, (though it never pulled faster than about 120 KW charging speed on DC Fast chargers, even with pre-conditioning).
This made things extremely stressful when the next charger on the turnpike was totally offline and the one after that only had 1 that would actually connect. I had to wait half an hour for it, before sitting for another 40 minutes just to get to 85% bc the charging speeds never went above 65KW. On a DC Fast charger. Yes, I'm sure being in freezing temps added to all of this, but it was way too much f**kery to all be bc of the cold. I know from reading this sub that plenty of people drive this car in extreme cold.
All as we drove through an ice storm. It took us 9 hours to get home, instead of the usual 6. I pushed the limits of what mileage we had left to get home without having to stop again bc we were exhausted, by slowing down by 10 mph and turning off the heat completely (which I was able to do at that point bc we had driven into warmer air).
I LOVE this car for around town, but almost all of my longer trips have been stressful, and this one takes the cake. The charging infrastructure is simply not there in middle America. I've taken it to CO, KC, and DFW. DFW is the only one I feel remotely ok with.
I don't think I'm willing to take it on the road again, beyond a full charge until I have a Tesla adapter. But honestly, I'm pretty pissed off about the entire experience.
