US govt changed my passport’s gender. Considering cancelling trip
I'm a transwoman who transitioned 10yrs ago. I pass 110%, voice, all the surgeries, etc. And I'm like real pretty as well. I've traveled to very anti lgbt countries before with no problem. But that was all with my female passport. Tried to get it renewed and they reverted back to male because of the new executive order. Lost my appeal as well.
I know Japan isnt terrible for lgbt people but I've never traveled with mismatching documents and I'll be traveling for 3weeks alone. I'm dreading the confusion I'll see at the hotel's faces when I check in and the gender doesn't match what they see.
Idk what to tell onsen hotels. I don't want to have to justify my validity by saying, no no no it's okay I have a vulva. I know private ones are an option but it feels shameful to have to hide. Then there's the whole police situation where I'm not sure what jail theyll even put me in.
It's been a long week for me, flip flopping between cancelling or not. Trying to weigh the emotional pain of having a male id define me to everyone I have to show it to against letting the govt's cruelty rob me of living my life. Would it be crazy to use the passport to enter the country but then use my female invalidated (holes punched through) passport to check in to hotels?
Idk what to do. I just want my old female passport to work again :(
Edit: you all are an amazing community who gave me actionable answers and overwhelming support. I'm going to go, I'll toast to you all my first night
