Applying gasket maker with paper gasket to motorcycle alternator cover to overcome warping?

Hello, I'm in the middle of a hellish job fixing an oil leak on a 2012 Kawasaki Vulcan Voyager 1700 with 67,000 miles.

The alternator/generator cover is quite large, and has an oil leak on the bottom.

During removal (massive job on this bike), I noticed that it visually and audibly popped away from the mating surface a bit when loosening some bolts.

Am I breaking any major rules by applying a reasonable bead of gasket maker on both sides? I know that over-applying is bad, due to pieces breaking off and blocking oil channels etc.

Thanks
