Hymns In Dissonance, the 9th studio album by Whitechapel is out. What do you guys think of it.
Personally, I think it is some of Whitechapel’s best work. They set out to create an insanely heavy album and they definitely achieved it. Like almost all of Whitechapel’s previous works it has this sort of groove to it. Where this album exceeds the most is easily in songwriting.
From an instrumental and sound point of view, the riffs are great in it, and the guitar solos have a lot of feel and emotion behind them. The drums are great too. The album was produced by their third guitarist Zack, who adds some black metal elements here and there throughout the album. The songwriting here is something special imo, every song feels unique and does something that others on the album don’t and I believe this album also does something really well, and that is producing heaviness without using breakdowns as a crutch. Are there breakdowns? Yea, but they aren’t the main focus of each song, and there’s a few songs on here that don’t have breakdowns, and I think this mentality is a great approach to deathcore that a lot of other bands should start taking. They use ambience, riffs and drums for a constant heaviness and use breakdowns occasionally to add some more in, rather than using the breakdown as the main source of the heaviness.
Lyrically the album is also great from a storytelling perspective as it is a concept album following a demonic cult trying opel a gateway to hell by enacting the 7 deadly sins, with 7 tracks on the album representing each of them. Personally, I see this as not only a return to form after the past 2 albums Whitechapel has made, but also as something new and a masterpiece in songwriting within the subgenre of deathcore.
TLDR: the album fucks hard and while we are this early into the year, as of right now it is my choice for album of the year
