Been out the loop a while...
Ok, so I used to stay up to date on tech back when I was getting my own computer and parts but I haven't stayed up to date much over the past 5yrs. To get to the point, my mom has started a new group that regularly do zoom meetings. She also is having to do alot of online chat/consulting so sometimes has 10-15 chrome tabs open. Also she has started doing the most very basic video editing (mostly cuts, crops, splices, with occasional text/image additions, nothing crazy) as well as her new cricut machine design app having some pretty outrageous system requirements for what it is (considering it just needs to move a cut head along 2-axis, and the 7-axis cnc machines I'm used to running are probably all services in Dos with 3.5" floppys) So her super basic laptop is beyond maxed out. She's open to getting a new one, but searching the $300-400 range. Im telling her another $100-200 on top of that will go a long way keeping her working several years into the future.
I'm looking around for a processor that has more than 4 cores, and like 12g ram at least i would think. And a fast SSD with like half to 1tb. I doubt she really needs a gpu, and also thought if she had good fast usb-c ports then maybe she can later get an external graphics card if the video editing gets more involved.
Battery life isn't crucial because she mostly leaves it plugged in in the office. Occasionally taking it down to living or dining room for browsing or Facebook. But I do wonder about weight...
Touchscreen not important but backlit keyboard is a must.
I'm also savvy enough to tear into it and add a memory stick or new drive in the future so mostly concerned with getting her a good processor off the rip. And idk about all these n100, n4135 or whatever designations. I assume they're just new names for mobile chips, and was hunting for i5s but its tough to find reputable brand i5 new for less than $600 with backlit keys, fast ports, etc.
I've had good experience in the past with HP, Vaio, Asus, and even Acer. Not familiar with Dell anymore as I haven't used one since school.. And I've heard good things about Lenovo, but some bad too.. and this new brand Nimo has been popping up alot, good reviews but I'm wary..
What do you guys think. Is she gonna need to step the budget up, as I feel? Although, it wouldn't be hard to beat her current slow ass 2-core celeron and perpetually maxed out 4g ram that she is going to use as a benchmark against..
