You all laughed at me
You're not laughing now are ya.
About 6 months ago I posted a bad experience I had with the Deliveroo app. It was night time, a delivery took me out of London into the woods. After delivering, I made my way back and tried to get online when I got closer. The app asked me to verify my face, and try as much, it wouldn't detect my face. I'm black African. I had to ride 10-15 minutes to find a well lit place.
That whole ordeal impacted my mental health, and I complained on here about AI discrimination, but everyone dismissed it. Told me to man up. I even had one other black person dismiss my grievance. 40+ comments, not one person sympathised with me.
Anyway, I've been doing Amazon ever since. Lately, I've also been doing a bit of Deliveroo, and I've noticed a new change in the app that you non-melanated riders won't have noticed; it will detect my face in almost pitch black environments. I just needed the tiniest bit of light. No more standing awkwardly under a lamp post looking for the right angle whilst passersby stare at you.
Clearly Deliveroo knew about the problem, and felt it was important enough to fix it. I suggest you all start taking AI discrimination seriously just like any other form of discrimination.
