Dressing like a boss in 2024

I want to start a discussion on the new rules for dressing like a high powered woman in 2024.

Googling female business executive style returns pictures of women in basic, fitted two piece suits in neutral colors with some basic silk shell. The images look straight out of the Corporette blog in 2015 and feel boring and dated. I feel like the standard silk blouse and conservative navy suit advice is not relevant anymore, outside of the most formal of workplaces (e.g., politics). Even on Wall Street, this type of suit or a basic fitted sheath dress feel dated.

This begs the question, what are female bosses wearing these days?

Walking in Manhattan during rush hour, women are wearing much more unique, trendy and current styles. In the office, I observe this to be especially true for senior women. While junior women are wearing current basics like the Aritzia wide leg pants and a fitted top, senior women are much more unique in their style, wearing things like this or or this:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/GettyImages-1470953607-26e46622417b4a0ba5f333d8d1900483.jpg). There is a clear difference in how different generations dress but it’s more nuanced than the “add a blazer” advice from the past. It seems the more senior you get as a woman, the more important that you still look current (not true for the men), but you still need to differentiate yourself from the junior staff.

What are your observations on exec women dress? How to look like you’re staying current but also like you’re the boss? Just wearing more expensive things or are there other tricks?
