When was the last time you were really impressed by an enjoyable movie's special effects?

I was watching the Lord of the Rings trilogy and thought to myself, Damn the CGI still holds up. No, I'm not saying it's as good as the best movies coming out today, but considering that they were made more than 20 years ago, they are amazing.

And if you had seen the movies in theaters at the time, then you may recall the exhilaration. I mean it's rare to get a very good story combined with good special effects. I've seen far too many bad stories or bad characterization combined with great CGI. Or the vice versa.

When was the last time that a movie that you enjoyed (whether because of the plot, characterization, or theme) also happened to have impressive special effects?
