OLDBOY Ending - Why I disagree with what appears to be the majority interpretation. Am I wrong? (*spoilers* - obviously)
I may be in the minority in this opinion, but I seem to disagree with the interpretation that Oh Dae-su lives while The Monster dies during the hypnotism. Watch the ending again. When Oh Dae-su is split into himself, who is ignorant of the secret, and The Monster, who knows the secret, it is The Monster who walks away and Oh Dae-su who stands still and watches The Monster go. When we cut to the next scene in the snow, Oh Dae-su stands up a short distance from the chairs where they had started the hypnotism session. I would say it's about the same distance that we see The Monster walk during the session. Oh Dae-su is the one who "died" and The Monster is the one who "survived". The smile he smiles when he hugs Mi-do is one of madness that he knows the secret and will have to keep the secret forever. The hypnotism failed.
Anyway, the key to my interpretation is that Oh Dae-su wakes up after having walked a distance from the hypnotism chair and The Monster is the only one who the hypnotist says does any walking. Thoughts?
