NUS vs Top 50 US
Hey guys,
I'm a Singaporean PR attending National Service starting in July. I am currently doing IB and had a predicted score of 44/45. As a Singaporean PR, I will be applying to NUS. I've visited the campus multiple times, but despite that, I can't get myself to like the super study-intensive environment I have been in since a young age cause I'm Indian. I also plan to settle in the US. I have two options:
- NUS bachelor - work in SG - Masters in the US
- US top 50 Bachelors - work in the US - Try for a top 10 college for masters in the US.
Disadvantages I see:
- NUS is literally the most study-intensive school-like college. I did IB, so I have zero social life. I always hoped college would fulfill the socializing and partying bit. Plus, I will be forced to live with my parents for at least 6-7 more years if I stay in Singapore. Job opportunities for tech aren't as big in SG as in the US, and I would personally prefer to work in the US.
- Studying in any US college will be very expensive for an international student. NUS will cost me about 25k per year, while a good US college may cost anywhere from 40-60k USD. It may not be as highly ranked globally as NUS.
Advantages I see:
- NUS will be cheaper, saving me money for my masters school in the US. NUS is ranked well globally (though I'm skeptical about these websites that put it above Princeton, Columbia etc.)
- Top 50 US schools would mean I would have the ultimate college experience I have always wanted to have. The job market and starting pay in the US would be more significant. Given that I wanna settle in the US, going there early on would help me get a taste and idea of how things are and allow me to get accustomed sooner.
I had asked this question on a general college subreddit, but now I want to ask the people in NUS themselves. I will also apply to most colleges this year, hoping to get a deferment cause of my National Service. Any and all insights would be appreciated. Please let me know if anyone has a smarter, more effective plan. Also, keep in mind: I will definitely settle in the US. So there is no chance of me staying in Singapore long-term. I really appreciate any help you can provide.
Also ps. I've never really heard of a party scene or anything fun NUS, at least not publicly. I would appreciate it if someone shared something regarding this. Thanks and cheers!!
