The Sony PS-LX310BT turntable makes me think I'm an audiophile?!
Well, hey! I've just bought my very first turntable - a Sony PS-LX310BT. After some research and a few recommendations from various trusted sources, I opted for what seemed like the easiest option for a complete noob to vinyl, and I can confirm that Sony delivers precisely that in the PS-LX310BT.
But... here's the thing....
I hate it.
Now, I get why it's so popular. It is so easy to set up and use that the appeal to the majority makes complete sense. It sounds okay, not great, but better than average. But the issue for me isn't the subtle disappointment that the slightly above-average sound offers. It's not even about the shoddy build quality (although the clackety, wobbly buttons feel like they might snap or fall off at any given moment). No, it's because there is naff all for me to do once I (carefully) push on that "start" button.
I wanted "in" to the vinyl scene because I feckin' LOVE music and love the analogue, tactile, hands-on experience that vinyl promises. Being involved in the process of specifically selecting a record, carefully removing it from its sleeve and onto the platter, physically placing the tonearm into position, and maintaining the counterbalance, cleanliness and cartridges ALL appeal to me.
As I said, it's about the whole vinyl experience for me.
The Sony might appeal to the masses, but for me, it's like having a self-driving car. You'll still get to your destination, but you'll miss out on the experience of driving the vehicle and being actively part of your own journey. Again, that might appeal to some, but not to me.
So, after that hugely convoluted description of how much I dislike the Sony, I've gone ahead and ordered an Audio Technica LP120XBT-USB (fully manual with preamp). Have I made the right decision (budget constrains me at around £250-£300)? Also, does this make me an audiophile?! I'm a musician, I often compose and record my own music, so I do tend to take joy and care in the finer details of audio quality. My family also work in concert halls and theatres, so we are used to how music should sound. Oh, and I love (and tend to recognise) analogue recording artists..... WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?!!
I'd love to hear about your experiences with the Sony and/or the Audio Technica and would appreciate any advice you might give a suspected audiophile on her first attempt at vinyl.
