Which game showed you you could overcome?
Back in the summer of last year, I was in a pretty dark place. The only thing I had was my games, and I had been advised by a good friend to try the Souls series. Being limited to the Nintendo Switch, I picked up Dark Souls: Remastered. At first the game wasn't for me. It was tough. Tougher than I expected but after getting a couple of videos on YouTube showing me the ropes, I got into it. Really into it. Death after death, boss after boss I felt myself learning, adapting, proving to myself I just needed to be patient, learn the flow of the fight, find new ways to succeed. And after 3 weeks of hard and endless suffering at the hands of Miyazaki, I stood before Gywn, Lord of Cinder. That theme sent chills down my spine and I beat him. First try. As I kindled the first flame I felt a weird sense of pride. I was actually excited to see what else I could do. Now with 3 Elden Ring runs under my belt, a new obsession with Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3 and failed crack at Lies of P (which is still an amazing game even if Laxasia handed me my ass for the 200th time in a row), I kind of understand those cringe posts I used to see about how Dark Souls changed lives. It did. I realised that no matter how hard things get, how bullshit something seems, you can either accept defeat, or git gud. So as we say in the Souls community, thank you Dark Souls. I'm curious to see if any other games showed my fellow nerds that being hard and being difficult are two different things, and overcoming difficulty is truly a thing to behold.
